Special Band/Music Notice from Mrs. Froese

This week concludes the general band program for this year, as some students are finding band difficult at this point. Our music classes will switch to a marimba based program for the rest of the year.

I am pleased to offer all interested and proficient band students a separate band option for the rest of the year, leading to a final performance. The classroom teachers have agreed to allow students the opportunity to meet with me for an extra class each week on Wednesday last block to rehearse as an advanced band, leading up to a final performance at the end of the year. (This was our band sectional pullout block. We will to have several extra rehearsals as performance time approaches.) This program is open to all band students, regardless of skill level. This is an interest based program.

In order to run the advanced band, I should have 20 students so that the performance pieces sound the way they should. I would appreciate you taking the time to discuss this option with your child so that he or she can let me know by next Tuesday, May 14th, so that we can begin the advanced band program on Wednesday if we have enough students to make a program. Home and lunchtime practise will be by choice and as needed for the remainder of the year, as many students have done a great job in learning their instrument through home practise already.

For Band next year, I am able to offer an advanced band option to our current Grade 6 students. Again, we need a minimum of 15 students. This program will operate on a pullout basis outside of the regular music blocks. We will have one in-school session and one session outside of the timetable at a time to be determined. I am also able to extend this advanced band option to experienced music students currently in grade 5. However, they must be able to play the first half of the beginning band book we currently use by September. This program will include extra performance out in the community, as well as feature performances at our school. This program will also include a composition component.

The following year in 2014, we can offer beginning band to grade 6 and 7 students by choice.

Parents, thank you for your support of this program in allowing your child to explore playing a wind instrument this year.

Sincerely,
Lorraine Froese
